View Full Version : Tiscali 150kbs broadband
Bob Smith
January 22nd 04, 10:42 AM
I have just signed up to Tiscali broadband 150kbs, and was wondering if
anyone else here had tried it.
The data rate seems to be 4 times faster than my modem, so large files
download well. Unfortunately, there seems to be a 20 second delay before
any data starts coming, so it is actually slower than my dialup modem for
viewing web pages. Does anyone else have this problem?
Thanks
Bob

Thanks for that. Do I have to get a list from Tiscali? Or are there some
anyone can use?

Er, how's he supposed to get to ns0.pipex.net without first resolving its IP
address by using a *different* DNS server? [Ever tried to lift yourself by
standing in a bucket and pulling on the handle?]
To use the pipex server, it is necessary to use its IP address, which
appears to be:
158.43.128.8

Thanks everyone. The DNS server is working though (I do get a web page
after about 20 seconds). I will put the numbers in tonight to see if that
one is faster (assuming pipex let other folk use their servers)

Hi,
Mine works fine for web and audio streams at 128k with no problems but the
news server is too slow to be of any use, anyone know an alternative news
server other than the standard ??

news.individual.net - text-only, but lets you be ISP independent.
Supports NewNews.

Well, it would not connect when I put Tiscali's DNS numbers in, or the pipex
ones. Maybe I have to put the WINS numbers in that are on the same screen.
I went through the tiscali connection help screen, and noticed that
"compress IP headers" was turned off on my settings, but not theirs. I
think it may have speeded it up a bit, but I could be imagining it.
Anyone got any more ideas?

what download speed do you get, for example the adslguide speed test
at http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
Interesting to see if you have just a delay or a speed problem as well

OK, will try that tonight when I am at home. I think the speed is OK though
(17k/sec on 150kbs).
Tiscali actually replied to my email. They mentioned firewall software may
be getting in the way, and that it is known to slow data rates down.
Something about selecting 56k as my connection speed when I installed it.
They suggested uninstalling it, and if I wanted to use it, to tell it I had
ASDL during the installation process. I have zonealarm (which they
mentioned) so will try this, although it sounds like a smokescreen answer to
me.

I get 152kbs downstream, and 260kbs upstream.

That's strange, my lineone email account became unusable ages ago, but the
news server is still there.
Usually you can only get at a news server if you connect via the ISP who run
it, so I suppose tiscali took over the lineone news server.

I got rid of zonealarm altogether (telling it I had broadband did not work),
and the problem seems to have gone away.

Do make sure that you replace it with something good like Agnitum
Outpost or Kerio Personal Firewall.
A personal firewall is one of the most important bits of the security
toolkit.

Do you know if the line noise requirements for a 150k service is less
than that for a full ADSL?
I am interested because my line is marginal.

Not sure. My connection (in the system tray) says it has connected at
2,222,222kbs (or some other 2 million type number) so it may be at the same
rate, just throttled at the server.
I just got it cos it was £2 quid a month more than my unlimited dialup
subscription, with free modem and connection.

the *attenuation* requirements are the same. It is normally provided
over a 2M circuit, if that fails it will be 512k. The rules are the
same as standard ADSL at those speeds.

If anything it's higher as Tiscalli appear to be ordering 2meg services,
for some reason or other, for their 150k customers (& then restricting them
in house). I know people who have failed their line tests with a Tiscalli
order & yet have succeded in getting a 512k service elsewhere.
There has to be some logic here, but for the life of me I can't see it...

Talking to one ende user today who failed the line test (remember it's a
2meg service) so Tiscalli told them they couldn't have a 150k connection but
they could have a 512k if they were willing to pay the extra...Go figure...

As I said there must be some logic, thanks for shedding some light on the
matter....

all datastreams are the same price. It makes sense to connect at 2M
then upgrade the customer's speed later (if required) without having
to involve BT.
Tiscali are a bit feckless, the should just re-order a 512k datastream
port and get that installed for the 512k service. Of 4 enabled
exchanges near me they have a connection to just one, so the
availability is a bit of an issue (same applies to plusnet's adsl
connect series which is also delivered by tiscali).

Yep, PlusNet offer the same thing.

Thanks for the info Phil.
I really must try again to see if I can now get ADSL.
